The Flavours of Greece

Overview

As you walk through verdant olive groves in the Greek countryside or stroll around vast pistachio farms, you realise that Greek cuisine is all about simple, rustic ingredients that complement the weather and topography of Greece.

Back home, you may have experienced Greek food, but rest assured, there is more to this cuisine than Greek salad and tzatziki sauce. A culinary culture dating back to more than 4000 years, Greek cuisine is full of wonder. We take you on a journey to experience the heart and soul of this cuisine, right from farm to the table.

Watch how the Mediterranean Sea blesses this country with fresh and flavourful seafood. Take a crash course in Greek cooking and learn how the Greeks bring together herbs, vegetables, sauces and meat to create lip-smacking, healthy dishes. Sip on the local ouzo and savour an array of mezethes and cheeses.

If you have a sweet tooth, you are in for a feast of desserts in Greece. Step into a local café and experience delightful desserts accompanied with a steaming cup of coffee.

When it comes to food, Greece has really outdone itself. With every new dish you try, you realise how rich and delicious this cuisine is and it leaves you craving for more!

Itinerary

Day 01: Arrival in Athens

Touchdown at Athens International Airport.

We kick off our Greek food trail right away with a welcome meeting at 6pm.

Enjoy a feast of refreshing mezethes, an array of small plates typically accompanied by a glass of wine or ouzo, in a rustic taverna.

Overnight stay at the plush hotel in Athens.

Day 02: Explore Aegina

We start the day with a hearty breakfast.

We hop on to a train and head to Piraeus port and then travel by ferry to the island of Aegina, our first stop in the Saronic Gulf.

Post checking into your hotel, strap on your helmet and zoom off on a bike tour along the coast, past sandy beaches and vegetable gardens, to the charming fishing village of Perdika.

Stop on the way to visit a pistachio farm. It is believed that pistachio trees were first planted on the island in the 19th  century, brought to Aegina via Syria, and the Greek island of Chios. Enjoy a sample from the farm and be sure to seek out fistikato or fistiki Aeginis glyko, specialty pistachio sweets of Aegina.

Overnight stay at the plush hotel in Aegina.

Day 03: Poros

Today, post breakfast, we head out to the open fish markets by the port to check out the fresh catch of the day.

You can even take a quick pit stop at the island's most famous pastry shop to pick up some pistachio goodies to take with you.

Next, hop on to the Poros-bound ferry. Poros is a small Greek island renowned for lamb, olive groves and charming white houses with terracotta roofs.

Take part in an evening cooking class with a local chef. Learn to prepare some classic regional dishes and then feast on your creations over dinner.

Overnight stay at the plush hotel in Poros.

Day 04: Explore Poros

We start the day with a hearty breakfast.

Today we take a day trip to Hydra Island, a quintessential Greek getaway. Hydra is truly the gem of the Saronic Gulf and stands alone among Greek islands as the one free of wheeled vehicles. No cars. No scooters. Just tiny marble-cobbled lanes, donkeys, rocks and sea. There are no land vehicles here, not even pushbikes, so put your walking shoes on and get acquainted with the locals and enjoy this one of a kind Greek Island.

Enjoy a delicious lunch of spit-roast lamb and then relax with a stroll along the marina, before returning to Poros in the evening.

Day 05: Poros to Nafplio

We start the day with a scrumptious breakfast.

Today, we drive from Poros to Nafplio.

On the way, we travel to the ancient site of Epidaurus. Named after Epidauro, the son of Apollo, the UNESCO World Heritage site of Epidaurus comprises the remains of the Sanctuary of Asklepios (the ancient god of medicine) as well as one of the best-preserved theatres of ancient Greece. The site was built to celebrate the power of the healing gods of the Hellenic and Roman worlds, with some structures dating back as far as the 6th century BC.

Next on the list is Mycenae where we will visit the Treasury of Atreus, also called Tomb of Agamemnon. Believed to have been erected in the period between 1350 to 1250 BC, this is one of nine intriguing beehive structures unearthed in this area.

We will arrive in Nafplio by late afternoon. Check-in to the hotel and you have the rest of the day leisure.

Day 06: Explore Nafplio

Wake up to the soft Greek sun and start your day with a hearty breakfast.

Today, we will explore Nafplio. The charming seaside town of Nafplio, considered one of the most beautiful in the eastern Peloponnese, reflects the legacy of Frankish, Venetian and Turkish conquerors in its culture and architecture.

Stop at a family-owned ouzo distillery for a taste of this iconic Greek aperitif. Traditionally distilled in copper pots, ouzo acquires its distinct flavour from the addition of anise. Star anise, fennel, mastic, cardamom, coriander, cloves, and cinnamon may also be added, and recipes are often closely guarded family secrets.

You have the rest of the afternoon at leisure. In summer, boats are also available to the Venetian fortress of Bourtzi, one of the most photographed sites of Nafplio.

Day 07: Explore Kardamyli

We start the day with a hearty breakfast.

Today, we head to the seaside town of Kardamyli.

Our first stop is the historic Sparta for a visit to its fascinating Archaeological Museum.

Arrive in Kardamyli by early afternoon. Located in the rugged coastal region of the Mani Peninsula, south of Kalamata, this stunning village is set against a beautiful backdrop of the ocean, cypress trees, wild olive groves, and distant snow-capped mountains.

You have the afternoon at leisure.  You can pack some hiking shoes and walk along the town's seaside trails or venture out to the nearby Diros caves .Comprising more than 2,800 passageways, it is believed that this complex of caves was occupied from around 4000-3000 BC. The excursion takes around 40 minutes on a boat, travelling over a 2.5 kilometre (1.6 miles) through passages and underground galleries laden with stalagmites and stalactites.

In the evening, settle back into your accommodation and enjoy a glass of retsina while watching the sunset over the Messenian Gulf.

Overnight stay at the plush hotel in Kardamyli.

Day 08: Explore Kardamyli

We start the day with a hearty breakfast.

Today, we take a day trip to meet some of the passionate food producers of the Mani Peninsula. We will visit olive groves and a traditional old-fashioned olive mill, where you will be introduced to the olive-oil making process. Enjoy a tasting with a delicious side of bread, paximadi (rusks) and whole olives.

Next on the list is a visit to an apiary where you will learn about the craft of beekeeping from the local keepers. Taste honey fresh from the hive.

We end the day with a visit to a traditional kafenio (coffee shop) to indulge in a typical Greek dessert, galaktoboureko, accompanied by a refreshing cup of  Greek coffee before returning to Kardamyli for the night.

As this adventure ends tomorrow, enjoy one final Greek feast with your new friends.
