Killarney, Cork & the Ring of Kerry

Itinerary

Day 1: Birr Castle, Adare, Desmond Castle & Killarney

Leaving Dublin we drive westwards to the Slieve Bloom Mountains. We stop at Birr Castle for a gentle stroll around the tranquil grounds. While there discover the history of the ‘Great Telescope’, the largest telescope in the world. Onwards to the pretty village of Adare renowned for its traditional thatched cottages and historic buildings such as the mesmerising ruins of a 15th century Franciscan Monastery and Desmond Castle. Finish in Killarney for an evening of traditional music in local eateries. (Overnight Killarney, B)

Day 2: Waterville, Moll’s Gap, Ladies View & Torc Waterfall

We leave Killarney and take in the breathtaking views of Carrauntoohil, Ireland’s highest mountain. Cruising along the coastal road there will be many opportunities to capture the spectacular views across the Dingle Peninsula. There will be further stops at either Daniel O’Connell’s birthplace or Cahergal Ring Fort before pausing for lunch in the pretty fishing village of Portmagee to sample the delicious local seafood or perhaps head to the island of Valentia to discover the Skellig Experience. We move onto Waterville for a quick photo stop before arriving at Coonmakista Pass where the view is reputed to be one of Ireland’s best.  Next on the cards is a coastal stop at the home of Daniel O’Connell, Derryanne House. Relish the chance to explore the O’Connell home before venturing outside into the exquisite gardens and on to the golden sandy beaches. More stunning views await at Moll’s Gap, Ladies View and Torc Waterfall en route to Killarney. (Overnight Killarney, B)

Day 3: Bantry Bay, Glengariff, Garinish Island & Kinsale

Our morning drive takes us through Kenmare and over the stunning Caha Pass, to the myth-ridden Bantry Bay. As our journey sweeps along the coastline we reach the village of Glengarriff where it is possible to take a boat trip past the seal colony to Garinish Island to discover the pristine gardens and ancient woodland trails. The afternoon brings us along the West Cork coastal road via Clonakilty and Timoleague to the harbour town of Kinsale. (Overnight Kinsale, B)

Day 4: Kinsale, Cork & Rock of Cashel

This morning we traverse from Kinsale to the city of Cork. Built on an island in the River Lee, Cork is often called ‘Ireland’s real capital’. Take a stroll through the English Market stalls, wonder at the French Gothic spires of St Fin Barre’s Cathedral and perhaps ring the spectacular 18th century Shandon Bells in the tower of St Anne’s Church. We begin our return journey to Dublin stopping en route at the mighty Rock of Cashel. Marvel at the awe-inspiring medieval monastery with its limestone outcrops and exquisite architecture before we head back to Dublin. (B)
