Overview

NAIROBI

Nairobi is also called the safari capital of Africa Nairobi is one of Africa's largest and most interesting cities. It is a place of enormous energy, a tireless and thriving bustle of people, and a city of differences. Assorted races, tribes and origins are all a part of its make-up.

Kenyatta Avenue is the city's favorite tourist image, a broad avenue fringed by trees and flowers that was originally designed to allow a twelve-ox team to make a full turn. There are several museums and places of interest in the centre, including the National Museum and Snake Park. There are numerous markets selling traditional crafts, especially the appealing Masai market. Just outside of the centre is the Nairobi National Park, and the nearby Bomas of Kenya host performances of traditional dancing and singing. The Langata Giraffe Centre offers visitors the chance to hand-feed the Rothschild giraffes that inhabit the area.

MASAI MARA GAME RESERVE

The Masai Mara Game Reserve- the northern extension of the Serengeti, is without question the world’s prime game viewing area. With one of the highest diversity of species, and concentrations of animals, the acacia- dotted plains of the Mara offer wonderful scenery and a spectacular abundance of wildlife. Elephants, buffalo, wildebeest, giraffes, hartebeest, bat eared foxes; regal black- lions, cheetahs, leopards, hyenas and jackals; monkeys and baboons, vultures, secretary birds, saddle bill storks, hundreds of migratory birds; countless pods of hippos around every bend of the Mara River, carefully watched by the other denizens of the rivers in the Masai birds; countless pods of hippos around every bend of the Mara River, carefully watched by the other denizens of the rivers in the Masai. Mara- the crocodiles, infamous for their spectacular role in the “Greatest Wildlife Show on Earth”- the annual wildebeest migration between the Serengeti and the Masai Mara, in which millions of wildebeest, zebra and topis brave the river, and the predators encountered daily, in their continuous annual treks in search of water and grazing, coming up to the Mara from the southern Serengeti plains.

LAKE ELEMENTAITA

Elementaita is in the south-to-north sequence of Rift Valley lakes - between Lake Naivasha and Lake Nakuru. The lake is a protected area due to its birdlife fame and it has been named by UNESCO as one of the heritage sites, together with the Lake Nakuru and Lake Bogoria. Over 400 bird species have been recorded in the Lake Nakuru/Lake Elementaita basin.

Lake Elementaita attracts visiting flamingos, both the Greater and Lesser varieties, which feed on the lake's crustacean and insect larvae and on its suspended blue-green algae, respectively. Fish on the lake attracts many fish-eating birds that also feed upon the flamingo eggs and chicks. The lake's shores are grazed by zebra, gazelle, eland and families of warthog.

The lake is normally very shallow (less than 1 m deep) and bordered by trona-encrusted mudflats during the dry seasons. Lake Elementaita is one of 6 Kenyan sites designated as Wetlands of International Importance (Ramsar Sites). Other sites in the Rift Valley are the nearby Lakes Naivasha and Nakuru as well as Lakes Bogoria and Baringo.

We, therefore, recommend that tickets are issued on the same day as the reservation. Some airports charge a departure tax, which is payable locally. These charges may not be claimed back from us.
