In the Shadow of the Caucasus

Overview

For a country at the crossroads between Europe, Asia and Russia, Georgia is surprisingly, well, Georgian. Unlike other Baltic countries that have adapted to the different cultures and empires that once ruled them, Georgia takes pride in retaining much of its culture, history and tradition.

Topped off on either side by mountain ranges to the north and south, Georgia is a diverse country that ticks off every box on your photo list. Snowy clad peaks that separate it from Russia give way to sunny Black Sea resorts and exotic wine growing districts as you move further south, towards the common border it shares with Turkey and Azerbaijan.

As you pass through the countryside dotted with several UNESCO World Heritage Sites, you'll notice old fortresses, castles and embankments that stand testament to the will of old Georgia, which stayed firm in the face of several invasions from Europe and Asia over the centuries. Right from the language to the Georgian Orthodox Church, everything bears the stamp of being authentically Georgian.

And the food? Well, with names like Khachapuri, Khinkali and Satsivi, Georgian food is homely and warm, and the ingredients are true to the regions they come from.

Get ready for a well-balanced and easy on the stomach diet while you're there.

To top it off, the people are warm and outward looking - if you end up losing your way, you'll probably end up dining at a strangers home and learning a lot more about Georgia than the average tourist.

Itinerary

Day 01: Arrival in Tbilisi

Arrive in Tbilisi, the capital city. Our on-ground travel coordinator will receive you and transfer you to your hotel. Overnight stay at the luxurious 4-Star Laerton Hotel in Tbilisi.

Day 02: Explore Tbilisi

We start the day with a hearty breakfast.

Today, we explore the Georgian capital, Tbilisi. Nestled in the foothills of the magnificent Caucasus mountain range, on either side of the glistening Mtkvari River, Tbilisi is a colorful city with a fascinating history.

We start the tour with a visit to the ancient Metekhi Church, which was built in the 13th century. The location of the church is a landmark as King Vakhtang Gorgasali, the founder of Tbilisi, built his palace here when he made Tbilisi the capital city.

We head to the Europe Square from where we take the cable car to the Narikala fortress. As you ride up to the fortress, enjoy the breathtaking view of the city. The Narikala fortress, which began as a Persian citadel is a treasure trove of stories.

Next on the list is a visit to the famous Sulphur Baths of the Abanotubani district. The Sulphur Baths were built between the 17th -19th century and are an integral part of Tbilisi culture.

We then proceed to Shardeni Street which is the heart of Tbilisi’s cultural and social life. Here, you can grab a quick bite from one of the beautiful cafes.

We end the day with a walk on the Peace Bridge over the Mtkvari River. This sleek glass and steel bridge designed by Michele De Lucchi is a stunning piece of work. From here, you can enjoy a beautiful view of the capital city and its scintillating skyline.

Day 03: Explore Bodbe | Signaghi | Lopota

We start the day with a scrumptious breakfast.

We kick start our drive towards the breathtaking Kakheti region. This region is Georgia’s prime wine producing region.

Our first stop is the Monastery of Bodbe. Here, rests Saint Nino, ’Enlightener of Georgians’, who preached Christianity in Georgia with a vine cross in her hand.

Next on the list is the quiet, sleepy town of Sighnaghi. With its cobblestone lanes, old fortresses, balconies, Sighnaghi is reminiscent of Italy. Lying in the shadow of the Caucasus range, time just slows down in Sighnaghi.

We continue our drive towards Lopota.

Overnight stay in Lopota.

Day 04: Explore Lopota

Today, post breakfast, you have the day at leisure to explore Lopota.

You can make the most of your time by basking in the spectacular view of the Lopota Lake and enjoying the peace and calm by the lakeside.

Overnight stay in Lopota.

Day 05: Day at leisure

Today, post breakfast, you will be transferred from Lopota to Tbilisi.  You can explore the length and breadth of Tbilisi, relax and shop till you drop. Overnight stay in Tbilisi.
