Food for your Soul

Overview

Beyond the pyramids, museums and the intriguing stories of the Pharaohs, there is a lesser-explored side of Egypt. The minute you step into the world of Egyptian gastronomy, you realise how rich and fascinating Egyptian food is. From the unique texture of ful medames to the healthy molokhia to Egypt’s very own bread, eish to the sweetness of basbousa, this cuisine packs a punch.

It is no wonder the oldest civilizations of the world has a centuries-old food history, so much so that wall paintings and carvings in ancient tombs and temples feature foods and feasts.

As you will learn on this food trail, beans, fresh vegetables and fruits form the foundation of Egyptian cuisine. Pair it up with juicy grilled meats and freshly baked eish bread and you have a vibrant plate with dynamic textures and an explosion of flavours. You will also be introduced to Faiseekh - salted, dried fish, an Egyptian delicacy that is a fitting tribute to seafood.

As you sample more and more Egyptian food, you will realise how the techniques and flavours have been influenced by Egypt’s neighbours in the Middle East and Europe.

Gear up to explore Egypt through its rich and nutritious cuisine.

We start the day with a hearty breakfast.

Today we visit the iconic monuments of Cairo.

We start the tour with a visit to a site that continues to capture the imagination of travelers even today, the Pyramids of Giza. The Pyramids, guarded by the fierce Sphinx are the last remaining wonder of the ancient world. No trip is complete without a visit to this magnificent site. You can explore the Great Pyramid of Khufu, the Pyramid of Khafre and the Pyramid of Menkaure. Beyond the pyramids are tombs, temple ruins and smaller pyramids that are open for exploration. As you gaze at these awesome structures, you can’t help but wonder how they conceived and built.

Next on the list the Egyptian Museum in Downtown Cairo which is overflowing with antiquities and artefacts from different eras. Founded by French Egyptologist August Mariette, this museum is, without a doubt, the greatest history museum in the world. You can time travel from one era to another as you go through the museum’s staggering collection. The highlights of the museum are the Tutankhamun Galleries which display the treasures found in the tomb of the king, the Egyptian Jewelry Collection and the intriguing Royal Mummies Collection.

For lunch, we will relish a typical Egyptian delicacy – Koshary. Koshary brings together rice, macaroni, lentils and chickpeas topped with caramelized onions and an assortment of sauces.

For dinner, we head to the iconic Abou El Sid for a quintessential Egyptian experience. While you are here, it is not just typical Egyptian cuisine that you will sample. The story of this restaurant is a fascinating one in itself.
