Overview

Experience a panoramic view of the mystical landscapes of  Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia and Laos.  The bygone Colonial era of Singapore Slings, afternoon  tea  and a tinkling piano amidst sumptuous surroundings conjures up a forgotten world.  Along with carriages incorporating Eastern motifs and themes, it is as exotic as it sounds.
 
Within the variety of the tours one can – cross  Malaysia via the causeway of the Straits of Johor;  travel  up the Malay Peninsula through lush palm plantations before pausing by the Moorish splendour of Kuala Lumpur station; visit Penang to discover the mosques and colourful shophouses of Georgetown;  feel the atmospheric thick jungle crowding in around the train passing through southern Thailand;  pass small villages and hill top temples en-route to Kanchanaburi and the infamous Bridge over the River Kwai;  wander around the capital city of Laos, Vientiane, with its gilded Buddhist temples alongside French colonial architecture;  enjoy the  bustling, vibrant city of Bangkok with its wonderful temples and markets; amble around Singapore with its history and the elegant Raffles;  have the experience of guided tours and lectures;  ride elephants  -  and so much more.
 
ACCOMMODATION
 
Suites
 
Pullman Cabin:  There are 30 Pullman Cabins that measure comfortably at 62 square feet.  During the daytime the compartment is a private lounge provided by a banquette style sofa.  At night the seating converts to an upper and lower bed. A private en suite shower, washbasin and WC is also provided in your cabin, along with a wardrobe and in-room safe.
 
State Cabin:  There are 28 State Cabins which measure 84 square feet each.  Configured as a private lounge during the day, with a banquette style sofa, fixed chair and one movable chair.  Fixed daytime seating converts into two single beds at night.  A private en suite shower, washbasin and WC is also provided in your cabin, along with a wardrobe and in-room safe.
 
Presidential Suite:  Each Presidential Cabin measures at 125 square feet, the ultimate in luxury train comfort.  The cabins are configured as a private lounge during the day, with banquette style sofa and fixed chair, and two moveable chairs. Fixed daytime seating converts to two single beds at night.   A private en suite shower, washbasin and WC is also provided in your cabin, along with a wardrobe and in-room safe.
 
Guests in Presidential Suites enjoy the additional benefit of a complimentary bar in their cabin.
 
The Dining Cars
 
You are assured of excellent Eastern and European cuisine in the dining cars, sitting at tables for 2 or 4 people in surroundings lavishly decorated with rosewood and elm panelling.  Lunch and dinner are served in the restaurants whilst breakfast is served in your suite.  Afternoon tea can be taken wherever you would like.
 
The Bar Car
 
Find cocktails, aperitifs, liqueurs and a fully stocked international bar on the Eastern & Oriental Express each evening, whilst enjoying a medley of music from the resident pianist as well as local entertainment.   The bar is open throughout the day and late into the night.
 
The Observation Car
 
The Observation Car offers you a truly unobstructed view of the scenery around you, with an open observation deck.   Its interior section is the perfect place to enjoy cocktails amidst a colonial ‘veranda’ ambiance with its teak wood flooring, panelled walls, rattan furniture and potted plants.   One-third of the Observation Car is an outdoor observation area decorated with teakwood.    It is the highlight of any train and is the perfect place to watch the exquisite scenery drift by as you sip a cocktail in the evening, tea in the afternoon or that early morning tea/coffee as the sun is rising.
 
 
CATERING
 
Lunch and dinner are served in the two Restaurant Cars, while a breakfast of croissants, fruit, coffee, tea and juice is delivered to your cabin daily.  
 
Each of the seasonally changing menus is created exclusively for the Eastern & Oriental Express by onboard chefs, incorporating the finest locally sourced ingredients. 
 
 

Itinerary

Day 1:
Bangkok. Stewards in traditional silk uniforms greet you as you join the Eastern & Oriental Express prior to its departure in the early evening. Having been welcomed onboard the gleaming carriages, settle into your comfortable cabin. Dinner is served as the train travels from the city into the countryside with its rice-fields, villages and water buffalo. Retire to your cabin, transformed into a cosy bedroom by your steward.
 
Day 2:
Wang Po & River Kwai. Awake early in order not to miss the excitement of the train making its way from Wang Po along the wooden trestle viaduct beside a towering cliff. On arrival at the River Kwai Bridge station, we disembark to walk down to the jetty to board a local raft for a cruise the picturesque Kwai Yai river, passing under the Bridge. On board, a local historian provides a brief overview of the history of the Thailand-Burma railway and the bridge. At the E&O landing point you board a motor coach for a brief trip past the North Temple and Chinese Cemetery to the Thailand-Burma Railway Centre. Explore this informative museum, where an historian is available to answer questions. There is time to visit the Don Rak War Cemetery adjacent to the museum.
 
Rejoin the coach for the short ride to the Kanchanaburi railway station to board the Eastern & Oriental Express and enjoy dinner with a drink in the Bar Car before retiring for the night.
 
Day 3:
Penang. Brunch is served before arrival into Butterworth where you will disembark for the crossing to Penang and a guided introductory tour of colonial Georgetown with pre-World War II mosques, elaborately-roofed temples, churches, bazaars and colourful shophouses. After the short ride back to Butterworth and rejoining the train, spend the afternoon watching the passing scenery from one of the lounge cars or from the open deck of the Observation Car. Dinner is served in one of the opulent dining cars and then spend a relaxing evening in the Bar Car with its resident pianist.
 
Day 4:
Singapore. After breakfast, it is soon time to leave the train, having crossed the Straits of Johor into Singapore.

Dress Code: Day Wear – smart casual Evening Wear – suit and tie for men, evening dress for ladies.
 

Luggage: Luggage is limited to 30 kilos per person for Pullman and State Compartment passengers. There is no limit for those passengers travelling in a Presidential Suite. Please keep your tickets, passports and any medication with you, do not pack them in your through or compartment luggage.

Through luggage: We suggest that items not required for your journey are packed separately in sturdy baggage. At check-in this luggage will be labelled appropriately by our staff and will not normally be accessible until you reach your destination. Ideally, large and/or hard cases should be checked as through luggage.

Compartment luggage: This should contain clothing and items you need during your journey. When you plan your luggage, please bear in mind that storage space is limited. There is a luggage rack plus an additional storage cupboard with hangers. One or two soft sided suit carriers or similar can be comfortably accommodated in each compartment.

Hand luggage: Your passport, tickets, jewellery, money, camera, fragile items and any medication should not be checked in.

The following terms and conditions form the basis of your contract with Al Majid Travel & Tourism LLC.  Please read them carefully as they contain important information.  By asking us to confirm your booking, we assume that you have read these terms and conditions and agree to them. 

As an Agent, Al Majid Travel & Tourism LLC arranges travel experiences and transportation with a large number of suppliers in the United Arab Emirates and around the world. These suppliers provide the following list of services.

·         Scheduled, Low Cost and Charter Airlines

·         Hotels, Villas, Apartments and Guesthouses

·         Package Holidays

·         Self-drive and chauffeur-driven car hire

·         Airport, Port and Resort Transfers

·         Luxury and Standard Rail Transportation

·         Ocean, Fjord and River Cruises plus Shore Excursions

·         Individual and Group Tours

·         Sightseeing and Attractions (including Theme and Water Parks)

·         Live Shows

·         Travel Insurance

·         UAE and International Visas

Each of these suppliers will have their own individual terms and conditions that will be explained to you prior to the booking being made. Copies are also available upon request.

BOOKINGS

A booking will only be made if the lead name in the booking is aged 18 years or older. The lead name assumes full responsibility for ensuring that all members of the travelling party accept the supplier’s terms and conditions. This person is also responsible for ensuring that all requested information is 100% correct. Failure to do so may result in the booking being rejected by any of the suppliers with no refund on any applicable cancellation charges. The information generally required includes the residency for each individual member of the party as well as the correct spelling of names, title, sex and age as per their passports.

PASSPORT, VISA & HEALTH REQUIREMENTS

It is the responsibility of the lead name to provide current copies of all passports for the party and to notify us if any member of the party has a passport (or UAE residence visa if applicable) due to expire with  6 months of the arrival back in the UAE post-travel. You must check visa and health requirements prior to confirming your travel arrangements, including transit visas if your flight in not direct. If a booking is made and confirmed at any time prior to visas being granted, this is done at your own risk. Neither we nor our suppliers accept any responsibility for either denied boarding or denied entry to a country for any reason, not limited to non-compliance of passport, visa and health requirements.

We recommend that you contact your Doctor or Medical Centre for the latest inoculations and malaria medication. We strongly advise pregnant woman and young families to avoid countries where malaria is present.

A booking can only be made once the deposit or full payment has been received. All bookings made within 12 weeks of departure will be subject to full payment. All services are subject to availability at the time of booking, which may differ from the time of quotation. Prices are also subject to change and cannot be guaranteed until payment has been received and the booking confirmed. For air travel, this means tickets issued. For hotel bookings, this means accommodation vouchers issued. It is important that all vouchers are read carefully for additional supplier information.

PRICING

We offer you the flexibility to create your own holiday from the range of accommodation, airlines and other services available. Because of this wide choice, it is not possible to list every price on every date. A ‘from’ price is indicative of the lowest price available for the hotel or itinerary featured but this may vary depending on a number of factors such as your date of travel, number of people sharing a room, choice of accommodation and airline availability.

The rates at some hotels may vary depending on your residency and therefore it is important that you confirm the residency and nationality of everyone travelling at the time of quotation.

All prices are subject to availability and final confirmation from the supplier. Certain airlines permit us as their agent to hold reservations for a certain amount of time without tickets being issued. It is important to note that in these instances, the fares are only guaranteed until 2359 that day and we are not liable in the event of an increase. We, therefore, recommend that tickets are issued on the same day as the reservation. Some airports charge a departure tax, which is payable locally. These charges may not be claimed back from us.

AMENDMENTS & CANCELLATIONS

All flight timings are provisional and subject to change. However you will be advised in advance of any major change as per your supplier's booking conditions. Only in extreme cases will an airline offer a full refund or date change should you not accept the change. On occasions your supplier may find it necessary to alter your any aspect of your holiday. Their policy regarding alterations is set out in their booking conditions.

Should you find it necessary to cancel or amend your holiday, please contact us without delay. Cancellations and amendments require written confirmation by the lead name in the party. Prior to making any changes, please verify any charges bearing in mind that these generally increase the closer you get to departure. In most cases, late cancellation will result in 100% charges.

TRAVEL INSURANCE

We strongly recommend Travel Insurance as protection against financial costs or losses in connection with medical treatment and travel inconvenience i.e. cancellation or curtailment and delay, damage or loss of baggage/personal effects.

GOVERNING LAW

Any matters that arise between you and us are governed by the laws applicable in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. It is also conditional on your agreement that any dispute that arises between you and us will be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the Courts of Dubai, except that we also we retain the right to bring proceedings against you for breach of these terms and conditions in your country of residence or any other relevant country.

Cancellation Policy

You or any member of your party may cancel your travel arrangements at any time. Written notification from the lead passenger must be sent by email to holidays@al-majid.com. For urgent cancellations, please ALSO telephone 04 2222007 or 2212213.
 
In the event of cancellation, there will be supplier charges that you will have to pay ranging from 10% to 100%, and these will be explained to you prior to booking. We encourage you to take out travel insurance, which may cover some or all of the charges depending on the nature of the cancellation.
 
Should you fail to cancel your booking in advance you may also incur a no-show fee in addition to any other supplier imposed charges.
 
Prior to confirming your booking, please ensure that you are aware of all cancellation charges.
