Itinerary

DAY 1

The trip starts in Bomerano, a small village in the municipality of Agerola, 47km south of Naples overlooking the Amalfi Coast.. Our comfortable family-run hotel is located in proximity of the small village square and provides a relaxing retreat from the busier towns by the sea. Surrounded by the picturesque Lattari Mountains, so called because of the milk produced by goats and cows that graze on the slopes and the presence of numerous pastures, Agerola is known nationally for the production of butter and delightful cheese, starting from Provolone del Monaco, exclusively produced in the area with cow’s milk and matured from 6 to 18 months, smoked caciocavallo cheese ( smoked scamorza cheese made from cow’s milk) and Fiord latte di Agerola , a mouthwatering fresh cheese made from the spun paste of cow’s whole milk. During the course of the week and starting from tonight's welcome dinner, we will have the opportunity to taste many of the delicious products of this area.

DAY 2

Visit century-old family run farm in Massa Lubrense; walk amongst orchards, vines, hives and lemon groves and enjoy included produce tastings and lunch; afternoon visit to Sorrento, home of Limon cello.

This morning we transfer (approx. 1 hr) to a family-run farm located in the heart of the Sorrento Peninsula, between Sorrento, Capri and the Amalfi Coast.  The farm was established in 1898 and after having been passed down is now run by the third and fourth generation of the same family. After a warm welcome, we take an insightful tour through orchards, vines, hives, lemon groves and other crops. We will enjoy an interesting talk on the farm's history and its sustainable production while getting a view into rural living. This will be followed by a produce tasting where we sample some of the freshest organic farm produce including lemons, infused olive oil, marmalades and wine.  We will conclude the visit with Mama's home cooked lunch! In the afternoon we drive (approx. 30 mins) to the town of Sorrento, hometown of Limon cello, the famous lemon based liqueur. Perched on top of a cliff, the town is known for its sweeping views over the Bay of Naples and its charming and elegant historic centre. There will be some free time to stroll around at our own pace or to enjoy a drink in the lively Piazza Tasso. Late afternoon we transfer (approx. 1 hr) back to our hotel in Agerola.

DAY 3

Visit a renowned local winery on the slopes of Mount Vesuvius; wine-tasting and participatory cooking class; afternoon sightseeing in Pompeii.

This morning we drive (approx. 30mins) to a renowned family run winery located on the slopes of Mount Vesuvius, near the town of Trecase. The grounds comprise 12 hectares of vineyard planted in the volcanic soil which have been worked every day since 1948 following the rigours of organic production. The wine produced here is the famous Lacryma Christi, made from grapes indigenous to the slopes of Mount Vesuvius, believed to have existed since Ancient Roman times. We being our visit with a tour through the organic vineyard and vegetable garden (to pick season vegetables to be used during the lesson) as well as the wine cellar and storage cellar. We will then enjoy a hands-on cooking class, where we will learn to prepare some local specialties which usually include Ravioli alla Caprese (one of the most traditional specialties from Capri made with heirloom Piennolo tomatoes), Parmigiana alla Napolitano: (the classic eggplant parmesan bake with a local Neapolitan twist) and Torta di mandorle al limone (a sweet almond cake flavored with the local Sorrento lemons from the Sorrentine Peninsula). We will then enjoy the food prepared for lunch, pairing it with Lacryma Christi wines.

On the way back to the hotel, we will make a stop in Pompeii, which was once an old thriving port town until Vesuvius’ catastrophic eruption in 79AD during which the city was buried in ash and pumice. Lost for 1700 years, Pompeii is now a UNESCO World Heritage site, as the perfectly preserved remains give us an amazing insight into life in a Roman city, complete with bathhouses, bakeries and homes- some of which are still have walls adorned with detailed frescoes. Entrance to the site is included in the trip and you have appox. 2 hrs to explore the site at your own pace or accompanied by a local guide (optional payable locally).  Transfer (appox. 30 mins) and overnight in Agerola.

DAY 4

Walk through orchards, forests and terraced gardens close to Positano; prepare lunch from foraged food; afternoon sightseeing in Positano.

Today starts with an active and inspirational experience as we walk (up to 2 hrs) along the breathtaking coastal trails overlooking Positano which have made the Amalfi Coast a Mecca for walkers and ramblers from all over the world. Here one can enjoy some of the most evocative views in the world, of ragged cliffs speckled with tiny villages and extensive views of the sparkling Mediterranean Sea. The route will follow undulating hills, carpeted with flowers in season, the contours of the land and the coast. Accompanied by a knowledgeable local guide, we will combine walking with a gastronomic lesson. This is a unique opportunity to visually experience the agricultural heritage and ecosystems of this area, and learn of the strong links between land and food in this beautiful corner of Italy. Along the way we will be shown seasonal wild edibles and mushrooms which grow naturally along the coast and will then learn how to create 3-course meal from foraged food. After lunch we head to colorful Positano, an almost vertical town clinging to the rock face of a sheltered bay. Take some time to explore the alleyways lined with wisteria and designer boutiques or have a dip in the clear water of the beachfront before returning to Bomerano in the late afternoon.

DAY 5

Shop for ingredients in the small village of Bomerano; cooking class to prepare lunch at the hotel; free time followed by evening pizza-making demonstration.

This morning we take a short walk into the village of Bomerano and get a full immersion into the very day life of locals as we shop for ingredients in the same delis they use - an authentic way to experience the place as residents rather than as tourists whilst supporting very traditional family businesses. Depending on the menu proposed by the chef for our cooking class, we will visit the butcher or fishmonger and the greengrocer. We will also visit the cheese maker, to learn how the famous local cheeses such as Fiord latte are produced by hand each day. Back at the hotel we will prepare a 3-course lunch guided by head chef and hotel's owner Giovanni, using the fresh ingredients just purchased in town. We will also be learning the secrets of the best authentic Neapolitan pizza and prepare the dough for the evening's dinner. The afternoon is free to relax, take a stroll around the area or enjoy the hotel's outdoor pool and terrace before joining a fun pizza making demo in the evening.

DAY 6

Free day: optional visit to Naples, capital of street food or Capri where glamorous shops and refined restaurants with a view await.

Day at leisure to visit other jewels of the Amalfi Coast and Bay of Naples. The hotel offers private transfers (payable locally) to the most popular attractions in the region not covered during the rest of the week. You might choose to take a ferry to the chic island of Capri, which with its intriguing combination of fabled beauty and hedonism has charmed its visitors for centuries, from Roman Emperors to contemporary Hollywood stars. The day here can be spent exploring the glamorous Capri centre, enjoying a fabulous meal at one of the panoramic restaurants overlooking the blue sea. Alternatively, you may choose to spend the day in Naples, known for its colorful and vibrant centre and fragrant street food. If you are fit and want to burn off some calories, consider a self-guided trek on one of the iconic coastal trails in the area such as the Path of the Gods. Otherwise consider spending the day by the pool or in true Italian style in a café, sipping espresso and watching the world go by!

DAY 7

Head to Ravello for final cooking class at school run by well known gastronomy historian. Afternoon sightseeing in Ravello; optional visit to Villa Cimbrone.

We conclude this food adventure with a special cookery class at an internationally renowned school in Ravello founded in 1974 as the Academy of High Medieval Conventual Cuisine. The school is run by Maestro Falcone, an expert in the culinary arts and famous historian of local cuisine, author of several cookbooks. The lesson starts with a brief introduction on the basic techniques and history of the ingredients used in the recipes which come from the organic garden. The menu varies according to season and includes four courses. At the end of the class we will enjoy the meal we have prepared paired with local wines - a culinary experience we will never forget! The afternoon can be spent exploring the romantic town of Ravello for some of the best views of the Amalfi coastline. Ravello also has a grand Duomo but the Villa Rufolo and Villa Cimbrone are the real gems of the town. Set amongst elegant gardens, the villa balconies stand at the edge of the cliffs offering stunning views aptly described by André Gide as 'closer to the sky than the seashore'. There is time to wander, enjoy a coffee and soak up the atmosphere before we return to the Bomerano for an optional farewell dinner arranged by the tour leader.

DAY 8

End Agerola.

Trip ends in Agerola in the morning.
