Itinerary

Day 01: Arrival in Cochin

Touchdown in Cochin, Kerala. Our on-ground coordinator will receive you and transfer you to your hotel.

Once you have checked into your hotel and freshened up, its brunch time!

A special brunch has been laid out for you. Kerala means the Land of Coconuts. So don’t be surprised if you find coconut in various forms in almost all dishes. The Welcome Brunch would consist of a spread of South Indian specialties. Watch dosas freshly made in front of you and relish this delicacy with a side of coconut chutney and sambar. Savour the flavours of Veg/Lamb stew with Appam (lace and string hoppers) and enjoy steamed banana and Puttu (rice flour steamed in coconut shells or bamboo) with golden syrup from the coconut palms. End your brunch with a steaming cup of authentic filter coffee.

Post the brunch, you can take a walk or relax by the poolside.

We then head out to explore the fascinating port city of Cochin and marvel at its culture and architecture, a result of centuries of various European, Chinese and Arab influences combined with rich indigenous history. We begin our tour with the Jewish Synagogue which was built in 1568 and is still an active house of worship for all the few remaining Jews in the area. Adjacent to the Synagogue is Cochin’s ancient and colourful Jew Street with its antique stores, souvenir shops and innumerable spice shops.

Next, we stop by at the Church of St. Francis, established by the Portuguese Franciscan Friars in 1503. This is the first European Church built in India. Vasco Da Gama, the Portuguese sailor who discovered the sea route to India was buried in this church before his mortal remains were shifted to Portugal a few years later.

After a long day, it’s time for a delicious dinner at a local restaurant where you will be served a selection of fresh local seafood. You will learn of the unique style of fishing here in Kerala where fishermen use Chinese fishing nets that were brought here by the Chinese explorer Zhang He almost six centuries ago.

Post dinner, head back to our hotel.

Day 08: Explore Chettinad

We start the day with a hearty breakfast.

Today, we learn about the building blocks of Chettinad’s cuisine – spices. This cuisine is one of the spiciest and the most aromatic ones in India. A variety of spices are used to prepare the dishes. The most important spices are Marathi mokku (dried flower pods), anasipoo (star aniseed) and kalpasi (a lichen known as the "black stone flower", also known as dagad phool). In addition, tamarind, whole red chillies and saunf (fennel seed) are also used along with cinnamon, cloves, bay leaf, peppercorn, cumin seeds and fenugreek.

We head to the weekly Market, called Vaara Sabdhai. Visiting the market is simply a delightful experience. The weekly markets are unspoiled and a great treat to visit. Vegetable and fruit vendors display their wares under colorful canopies, bantering with customers and tourists alike. There is also a fish market and a section for household and farm utensils. The market is set up on a temporary base to be moved to the next place for the next day. Accompanied by our chef, you will learn about the local products and their use in the kitchen.

If you are tired, we can stop by a local tea stall and savour the locally made tea, called “chai”.

After returning to the hotel, you have the option of enjoying the pool, or participating in the kitchen as the chef prepares lunch. In Visalam, it is a tradition to serve lunch in the kitchen.

In the afternoon, we will visit the Chettinad Handloom that is famous for its unique style of dramatic and spontaneous use of colors and patterns with bold checks, stripes and contrasting hues. It is an experience to visit one of the local units and observe the weavers exhibiting their skills on these old-style looms, which require special experience.

We continue our exploration of Chettinad and learn more about this town. Chettinad is rich in cultural heritage, art and architecture. It is well known for its houses, embellished with imported marble and Burmese teak. These 18th century mansions have wide courtyards, spacious rooms and rich woodcarvings. The walls were made with a paste made out of plaster and egg whites and then polished to give a smooth texture and a glossy shine. Some of the mansions possess several courtyards and cover the ground between the streets.

Athangudi tiles are named after their village of manufacture in Chettinad and come in myriad colors and patterns. The designs and colours used in Athangudi Tiles are traditionally still those of a bygone era. However, lately, new designs and patterns are being incorporated. The tiles are hand-made in a slow process. It’s an enriching experience to visit the local tile makers while in the area.

For dinner, we have a special Chettinad wedding feast with 21 dishes in store for you.

Overnight stay at the plush 3-star Hotel Visalam in Chettinad.

 Day 09: Chettinad to  Pondichery

Today, post breakfast, we check out and drive to the east coast, to the city of Pondicherry.

En route, we will we visit Thanjavur. Most of the great and still living Chola Temples are located in and around this area. The foremost and most impressive among the great temples, the Brihadeshwara temple, is located in the center of the city. This temple is considered a storehouse of art and architecture. The temple has some exquisite stone carvings.

For lunch, we stop at a South Indian restaurant for a typical vegetarian lunch.

Next on the list is the great Chidambaram temple dedicated to Lord Shiva in his form of the cosmic Dancer. It is said to be the birthplace of Shiva as the dancer (Nataraja) and therefore is one of the most important temples in India. The place where the temple is located is the center point of the world's magnetic equator and thus considered the center of the world. The Shiva temple in Chidambaram is also one of the very few shrines in South India, where foreigners are allowed inside without any restrictions. It is a great experience to witness one of the many rituals held daily in the temple.

Upon arrival in Pondicherry, check in to the hotel and relax.

Later in the evening, we walk down to one of the popular local restaurants for dinner.

Overnight stay at the plush 3-star Palais de Mahe in Pondichery.

Day 10: Explore Pondicherry

We start the day with a hearty breakfast.

Today, we explore the unqiue town of Pondicherry. The city has a long and interesting history of trade and war. There is a strong French influence in the city, with Rues and Boulevards lined with Mediterranean style houses and bakeries. Bright plaster houses, neat narrow lanes and blue-enameled street signs mark the French Quarter. The Tamil Quarter of Pondicherry is a place where cultures not only meet, but melt. Rich markets and busy lanes give birth to a way of life found nowhere else in India.

This is a wonderful town to be explored by foot or on cycle. Take a cycle at the hotel and explore the city. You can visit the Aurobindo Ashram, the French, Christian, Hindu and Muslim quarters, the incredible colorful main market, the beach promenade and the Ganesha Temple.

A visit to Auroville provides an insight into the project of the Sri Aurobindo Society. The experimental "universal township" was to contribute to the progress of humanity by bringing together people of goodwill and aspiration for a better world. As a vision, "Auroville wants to be a universal town where men and women of all countries are able to live in peace and progressive harmony above all creeds, all politics and all nationalities. The purpose of Auroville is to realise human unity and harmony across cultures."

Drop in at the Aurobindo paper factory, and the Auroville Store, full of oils, incense sticks, fashionable clothes and more. Have a cup of coffee at the Kafe Express or relish an authentic fresh meal at La Maison Rose, a treat that reminds you of old Europe.

For lunch, stop by at a small guesthouse in the Tamil Quarter (Maison Perumal).

For dinner, gear up for a gala farewell dinner at Palais de Mahe.

Overnight stay at the plush 3-star Palais de Mahe in Pondichery.

Day 11: Depart from Pondicheery

After an exciting 10-day journey into the heart and soul of South India and its cuisine, it is time to say goodbye to India.
